Jonathon on Flying, Madeleine and getting Older
Aug 14th, 2007 by Jonathon Moore
last Saturday marked 100 days since Madeleine McCann first went missing in Portugal, I was planning on posting something about my disappointment with the media for seeming to get bored with this case and allowing it to drop from the public eye. As it happens some recent developments seem to have reignited their interests, what I will say is that I am disappointed with the Portuguese authorities who seem only partially willing to stick to their own laws. Much of the information gained by the police must be kept secret whist the investigation is still on going, this must seem very frustrating to Madeleine’s parents who naturally will want to be told of all new developments but cannot. This is Portuguese law and I have no quarrel with that, what does upset me though is the fact that even with this law in place the authorities have allowed the rumour to slip that they believe Madeleine may have been killed before being taken from the room. This is a hugely important piece of information and as they are unwilling to reveal more details about it surely more should have been done in the first place to prevent it becoming public knowledge. Still, to anyone who reads this, please please, continue to support the campaign to bring Madeleine home and do not allow yourself to decide guilt or to judge/blame anyone as this is not for us to do and should be left in the hands of the authorities.
In more cheerful news, Saturday was also the day that I joined a new gliding club, Long Mynd/Midlands Gliding club, which is apparently one of the most challenging areas to fly in Europe. I made sure to get up early so that I could arrive by about 8:00 in order to get an early spot on the flying rota (which I did!). It was a very fun day, I got three flights and gained a lot of experience in finding thermals and soaring. Everybody there seems really nice and I expect to go back again quite soon. With a bit of luck it won’t take too long before they trust me enough to let me start flying solo again. Also they have a really good bar with some nice cask ales…mmm…
Finally last night marked the end of an era for me as it was my last night as Instructor Cadet Warrant Officer Moore J #1414 2279 Wrexham Squadron ATC. The reason for this is my 20th Birthday which is on Thursday which will put me over the age limit, it’s not the end of me though as I’ll stay on as a temporary Civilian Instructor whilst I go through the process of trying to get a commission so that I can stay on permanently as an Officer… I’ll let you know how it goes, but so far it’s been slow…
